September 2005 | Risk SummaryThe election in December 2004, which brought President Armando Guebeza of the FRELIMO party to power with 64% of the vote, was another important step towards consolidating democracy. It also marked a continuation of the uninterrupted dominance of FRELIMO since independence at the expense of the opposition RENAMO party and its veteran leader, Afonso Dhlalakama. Both movements remain ethnically and regionally based and memories of the long civil war that ended in 1992 between them have not faded completely.
