April 2006 | Economic AnalysisNamibia gained independence from SA 'administration' in 1990, but the economic ties between the two countries remain a dominant feature, especially as the local dollar is fixed-at-par to the rand. The influence of SA financial institutions is also noteworthy: a highly developed savings management industry is in place, with assets of close to 100% of GDP. However, about two-thirds of the annual rise in savings is invested in SA, given the paucity of local opportunities, which makes it difficult to fund economic diversification.
