President John Kufuor, nicknamed the 'Gentle Giant', was re-elected with 52.7% of the vote in elections at the beginning of December that were described as 'peaceful, free and fair' by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers. Turnout reached a record 83%. The president's New Patriotic Party (NPP) also won a majority in parliament, gaining 129 out of 230 seats. Kufuor is expected to build on the achievements of his first term, when improving standards of governance and macroeconomic performance earned Ghana an international reputation as a haven of democracy and stability in an otherwise volatile
