April 2005 | Ratings UpdateAn agreement signed between the government and separatists rebels could bring an end to the 22 years of sporadic conflict in the southern Casamance region. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) has waged a 'low-level' insurgency since 1982, seeking independence for fertile Casamance, which is divided from the rest of Senegal physically, ethnically and religiously. While hopes are high that the peace deal will hold, the MFDC is splintered into numerous rival factions, with divisions between its political and military wings. As such, there are concerns that the deal does not have the support of all rebel groups and will therefore fail.
