Armed militias in the east of the country continue to threaten the fragile peace. In addition to the ongoing attacks on villages, the presence of the Rwandan rebel group, the FDLR and the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army is particularly destabilising as it increases the likelihood of military incursions into the DRC by the Rwandan and Ugandan armies. The ability of the Congolese army to disarm these groups by force depends on the engagement of the international community, and its willingness both to provide more UN peacekeepers and to put pressure on Rwanda and Uganda to end any covert support to
