The security situation has taken a dramatic turn for the worse with anti-government protests in the capital and ‘irregular activity’ on the disputed Eritrean border. With military manoeuvres on both sides of the UN-patrolled Temporary Security Zone (TSZ), fears are rising of a resumption of the conflict which cost 70,000 lives between 1998-2000. The Eritrean authorities have placed a ban on UN helicopters and severely restricted the movement of UN personnel and vehicles inside the TSZ, while the UN reported that Ethiopian troops had occupied the demilitarised buffer zone for five days at the end of November.
