August 2006 | Ratings Update

Strike action called by one of Chad's main trade unions finally ended late July when parliament decided to give into demands of the protestors. Government offices and healthcare facilities had been closed since June 5, with the union demanding the 5% wage hike for workers promised by the government in 2005. The government had refused to increase salaries, arguing that money had to be spent on dealing with the deteriorating security situation in the country. However, freezing wages or failing to pay workers will only exacerbate political instability by adding to public frustration.
