At the time of writing it appeared more than possible that President Moshe Katsav could be indicted on rape charges - a development to which Katsav has promised to respond by resigning. In such a scenario, which looks more than possible, elections would be held within 45 days, which would likely be around early-to-mid December. While a new president does not necessarily mean any policy change, since the role is largely ceremonial, a victory for the Likud candidate Reuven Rivlins, who appears to be the front-runner at the moment, could signify a shift to the right going forward.
