According to news reports, security at the capital N'Djamena and the presidential palace has been tightened as fighting has broken out in the east of the country. An upsurge in rebel violence in Chad has long been expected, particularly with opposition groups contesting the legitimacy of President Idriss Déby's May election victory, and the spill-over of violence from conflict-stricken Darfur. Indeed, rebel forces have attempted to directly overthrow the government twice this year alone. Divisions amongst the rebels may yet provide a further opportunity for President Déby's forces to repel the attacks. However, his reign is by no means secure,
