October 2006 | Economic AnalysisLesotho has a somewhat turbulent political history, with the low point being in 1998 when Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces intervened militarily to quell civil unrest. Since then, gradually a form of democracy has taken hold, with the once absolute monarchy transformed into a mostly symbolic role. Governance is in the hands of a prime minister chosen by the majority party in the 120-seat parliament, which since 1998 has been the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD).
