October 2006 | Ratings UpdateStubborn inflation and a weak Guinean franc are sources of acute public discontent, which has manifested itself in violent strikes this year. Coupled with the brittle health of the long-serving president Lansana Conte, who on a number of occasions has left the country for hospital visits, the outlook is bleak, to say the least. What is more, progress toward the Millennium Development Goals is slow. Guinea ranks near the bottom, in 129th place (out of 133 nations), in our short term political risk ratings.
