Egypt became the latest in a string of countries to find itself embroiled in an impassioned debate about the Islamic headscarf, or hijab, in November, when Culture Minister Farouk Hosni said the increasing trend towards covering up was a 'regression', sparking angry protests. The issue has proved a divisive one from Baghdad to Rabat to London, and as such it is no surprise that the ruling National Democratic Party has distanced itself from the comments. Indeed, it is telling that one of the first instances of an Egyptian minister coming under pressure from his own party relates to an issue
