November 2006 | Risk SummarySeif al-Islam Qadhafi's departure was both unexpected and worrying given his heightened profile over recent months. The reformist leaning son of the leader, Colonel Qadhafi, has been a key player in re-orienting the country's away from its rogue nation status back into the international fold and has publicly pushed for economic and political liberalisation. Perhaps his most daring act was his speech to youth activists in August, when he referred to the regime as a 'mafia' and called for democratisation - a move that is unlikely to have pleased the conservative 'old guard'.
