As expected, vice-President Atiku Abubakar has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2007 presidential election, which is set to be held on April 19. Abubakar will not be able to stand for his own party, the PDP, in the presidential primaries in December, after President Obasanjo accused Abubakar of corruption in two reports sent to the senate in September, resulting in a three-month suspension from the party. However, as we anticipated, this does not appear to have stopped him, and he will stand as an independent candidate. Election-generated uncertainty is indeed a concern, but has already been factored
