The amendment of Algeria's energy laws earlier in the year reversing the March 2005 liberalisation of the sector perturbed foreign investors and raised the question of the credibility of contracts which it seemed could be easily undermined as a result of popular pressure. According to the new version of the energy law, the state energy firm Sonatrach will have at least a 51% stake in future contracts awarded to foreign oil and gas companies.
