Risks To Stability Remain Limited Despite Latest Attacks
December 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisWhile there have as yet been no claims of responsibility, the attack on a bus carrying foreign oil workers in Algiers is likely to have been carried out by Islamist militants, possibly the Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat (GSPC, Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat). The GSPC has rejected the national reconciliation process that aims to draw a close to years of civil war which raged during the 1990s, with its militants defying a six month amnesty to lay down their arms. Instead the militant organisation has stepped up its violent campaign, particularly against Algerian security forces
