Qatar enjoys the highest GDP per capita in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), and by this measure is one of the richest countries in the world, making for a very stable political environment. Domestic opposition to the country's pro-US foreign policy and 'low-level' ties with Israel are likely to be allayed somewhat by the country's recent financial support for Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority, while the foreign minister's recent efforts to mediate between Fatah and Hamas in the Palestinian territories are also likely to have gone down well with the public.
