January 2007 | Risk SummaryPresident Robert Mugabe's used his end-year state of the nation speech before parliament to tell Zimbabweans that 'their troubles would soon come an end'. In his view, newly found friends in Asia will soon rescue the country 'from the repression and sabotage' inflicted on the people by the UK and its allies. He also praised the army and police for safeguarding the 'peace and tranquillity' the country was enjoying. What he failed to mention is that the economy continues to implode, Zimbabwe remains an international financial pariah, and the regime is struggling to retain the loyalty of the security
