January 2007 | Ratings Update2007 is the 50th anniversary of Ghana's independence from Britain, and the festive atmosphere is likely to support the already notable cohesion of Ghana's around 70 ethnic groups. The next presidential elections are scheduled for December 2008, and the incumbent president John Kufour will not be able to stand for a third term in office. While there is likely to be a gradual rise in positioning between the two main parties, Kufour's New Patriotic Party (which holds a 55.7% majority in parliament) and the National Democratic Congress (39.5%), toward the end of 2007 we see few major threats to political stability in Ghana.
