January 2007 | Political Risk AnalysisRelations between Libya and the EU have become increasingly strained over the long-running controversial case of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for deliberately infecting over 430 children with HIV in Libya. Death sentences followed a guilty verdict, which was again reached on December 19 last year, after the Supreme Court had thrown out an original court ruling and demanded a retrial. The nurses, along with a Palestinian doctor, continue to protest their innocence, claiming they were forced to confess under duress.
