According to the Minister for Religious Affairs Algeria is 'going though a 'severe cultural and religious crisis'. There are reports that Qur'ans being forged and mosques being used for 'jihadist' purposes - raising fears of a return to radicalisation of the populace in a country which was embroiled in a civil war in the 1990s.
