February 2007 | Risk SummaryRecent clashes with Islamist militant gunmen highlight ongoing security risks in Tunisia. According to the Interior Ministry fourteen militants were killed by the security forces and a further fifteen were arrested. Allegedly the Islamists were planning to target foreign embassies and officials in the country. There has been much noise concerning the increasing impetus given by the Algerian militant group, the Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat (GSPC), to regional militant organisations and the implications for political stability. Indeed, the Interior Minister claimed that the militants had been organised by 'terrorist Salafists who infiltrated via the Algerian border'.
