February 2007 | Risk SummaryThis coming year is shaping up to be an interesting political year for Kenya, and there are quite sizeable risks to stability. Violence in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls can not be ruled out, and we expect pre-election campaigning to be tense and impassioned. The ongoing instability in neighbouring Somalia and the associated refugee flows bring security risks to Kenya too. The US government suspects al-Qaeda linked Islamist cells are operating near the Somali-Kenya border, groups similar to those that carried out the 1998 Nairobi bombings.
