Mugabe In A Quandary
February 2007 | Market StrategyPresident Robert Mugabe has made it clear that he would prefer to step-aside at the end of his current term in 2008. But that now seems a pipe-dream as he has lost control of his ZANU-PF party. Mugabe needs a strong and united ZANU-PF as a prerequisite for his retirement for two reasons: firstly, to safeguard his legacy as a liberation hero and father of the nation and secondly, and more important practically, to give him as much insurance as possible against potential future prosecution on charges of gross corruption and crimes against humanity. So, reluctantly, at the ZANU-PF party
