We assess the likelihood of political disturbances as low, in view of the stability seen since independence, but nonetheless highlight many formidable hurdles on the road ahead. Regionally speaking, spill-over effects from the economic turmoil in neighbouring Zimbabwe is an oft-voiced concern, but thus far this threat has remained fairly subdued. Domestically, poverty is still rife and the HIV/Aids pandemic threatens to erode part of the economic miracle status assigned to the nation. But, overall the score-sheet of the government is strong and this underpins Botswana's comparatively strong position in our ratings universe.
