February 2007 | Risk SummaryWe assess the likelihood of political disturbances as low, in view of the stability seen since independence, but nonetheless highlight many formidable hurdles on the road ahead. Regionally speaking, spill-over effects from the economic turmoil in neighbouring Zimbabwe is an oft-voiced concern, but thus far this threat has remained fairly subdued. Domestically, poverty is still rife and the HIV/Aids pandemic threatens to erode part of the economic miracle status assigned to the nation. But, overall the score-sheet of the government is strong and this underpins Botswana's comparatively strong position in our ratings universe.
