The sentencing of a Tunisian journalist to 14 months in prison for an article written four years previously and a court's decision to bar an independent human rights league from holding a congress highlights the closed nature of the political regime in the North African country. Nevertheless, with sound economic growth leading to rising incomes, and little external pressure to speak of, any significant political change remains a distant eventuality.
