The parliamentary elections planned for 2008, and presidential polls in 2009 have the potential to set Angola on a democratic course after the end of the ruinous 27-year war in 2002. But mistrust between the government and the main opposition is still palpable and likely to keep tensions high. Recent jitters were sparked when the head of Angola's largest opposition party UNITA, Isaias Samvuka, told media that police may have tried to assassinate him and warning that government actions could reignite hostilities with his former rebel group.
