The only regular data that has recently been released by officialdom has been monthly inflation figures, although BMI and the rest of the market have long regarded these as seriously suspect. A SADC economic fact-finding mission was recently in the country to assess what Zimbabwe's regional partners could do to help stabilise the economic situation, and it is difficult to disconnect the withholding of the other economic data with their presence. There are few countries in the world that obfuscate economic data to the extent of Zimbabwe. But we feel that this year's food harvest will at best meet one-third of local demand, much of mining production is being smuggled out of the country, and domestic demand and investment is virtually non-existent.
