Algeria's short term political rating is constrained by its low score in the social stability component. Algeria is essentially a country in transition from the decade of civil war in the 1990s that followed the military's annulment of parliamentary elections which the Islamist Front Islamique du Salut was expected to win. While a core group of militants refuse to lay down their arms as part of a general amnesty and terrorist activity is ongoing, we feel the risks of a drift back to widespread conflict remain slim.
