Pardon Me?

June 2007 | Risk Summary

South African efforts to broker a political solution have yet to move beyond separate 'talks about talks' with the main protagonists. Developed country governments remain largely uninterested but human rights campaigners are trying to increase pressure on the regime. One NGO, the Centre of for Housing Rights and Evictions, is lobbying the UN to put President Robert Mugabe on trial before the International Criminal Court for the 2005 'slum clearance' that left 700.000 people without homes/livelihoods. President Robert Mugabe is also potentially chargeable for ethnic cleansings in the 1980s.
