Voter Registration Delayed

As we suspected the June 15 deadline for voter registration has proved too optimistic. The National Electoral Commission has voted unanimously to extend the deadline by 90 days, saying that heavy rains had slowed the registration process. The commission stressed that the extension would 'not affect the electoral calendar'. As things stand parliamentary elections are scheduled for 2008 and presidential elections for 2009. Any delay of the polls - the first since the aborted 1992 ballot - would be bad news for the country, which recently emerged from a near three decade long civil war.
