June 2007 | Risk SummaryMixed signals continue to cloud the outlook over the possibility of talks between Syria and Israel: while there is still speculation about military conflict, and a US source has suggested that negotiations at this point would 'only further destabilise matters', the Israeli government has been making conciliatory noises. However, the government is fairly discredited thanks to its policies in Lebanon and Gaza, and polls show that if elections were held now, the much more hawkish Likud would likely take over, reducing chances of peace with Syria. In any case, we are not convinced that such a deal would necessarily increase
