For one, the long fought legal battle between the government and the San bushmen - which the latter won with the aid from international rights groups late last year - was seen as a loss of face for the authorities, who suffered from a 'bad guy' portrayal in international media. Moreover, in April, a ban on 17 people, predominantly foreign journalists and human rights activists, from entering the country has been interpreted as part of a clamp-down on free speech and as undermining democracy.
