Still Bickering
June 2007 | Risk SummarySince the end of the civil war in 1992 the country has established a good record of free elections with the third taking place in 2004. All have been won by the incumbent Frelimo Party over its old armed adversary, Renamo. While peace has been maintained, the two still find it extremely difficult to work together for the common good. There is little difference in policy orientation, which tends to result in politicking. This squabbling has generated growing apathy amongst the electorate: in the 2004 ballot turnout was only 36.4%.
