July 2007 | Risk SummaryThe ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), who has ruled the country without a pause since independence from Britain in 1966, is due to hold its 44th congress and elections in July. The congress will be President Festus Mogae's last as he will hand over the party and state presidency to VP Khama next year. As usual no one will mount a challenge against Khama for the party chairmanship, but commentators find it strange that Khama has not announced his stepping down, in view of his guaranteed succession of Mogae next year.
