While it may have consolidated its own domestic standing through the crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), any sympathy for Hamas will cast the Cairo government, which is firmly supporting Fatah and Israel, in a bad light. The Mubarak administration has apparently said that it will not allow the deployment of an international force along its border, over which weapons are thought to be being smuggled
