A Dream Deal
August 2007 | Market AlertBotswana's status as a leading global producer of diamonds is not in imminent danger, but finding and extracting gems is becoming more difficult and costly. The government has decided on a policy that seeks to capture more of the value-added of the final price of diamonds, and last year negotiated a ground-breaking contract with De Beers that will move a much greater portion of the sorting, valuation and polishing process to Botswana. The agreement is a model for other natural-resource-based African economies.
