The publication of this year's National Insurance Institute report on poverty in Israel is unlikely to have the same effect it did last year, when it contributed to a pre-election shift to the left which allowed the Labour party, under Amir Peretz, to come second in the polls. Opinion polls have shown that public opinion is still firmly with the right-leaning Likud. However, the report, which shows that 24.5% of Israelis lived below the poverty line in 2006, down only slightly from 24.7% in 2005 in spite of strong economic growth, may add to pressure on the already unpopular Olmert
