October 2007 | Ratings UpdateThe IMF has recently focused attention on Algeria's woeful unemployment levels. A working paper published recently by the fund suggested that unemployment rates in Algeria could become the highest in the Middle East and North Africa region. The paper further commented that labour market regulations and labour taxation are insufficiently conducive to creating jobs. High unemployment poses a threat to social stability and this is echoed in our political risk ratings: we give Algeria the lowest score possible for the 'unemployment' category of our short-term political risk ratings.
