October 2007 | Risk SummaryThe leader of Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) Paul Bérenger was in September appointed the leader of the opposition for the second time since the last general elections. The leader of the opposition enjoys the prerogative of the Private Notice Question - the power to fire questions at any minister, including the prime minister - and this is widely seen as an important tool in holding incumbents to account. Bérenger is unlikely to pull his punches, and this bodes well for keeping ministers on their toes ahead.
