Democracy is alive and well in Botswana, but the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has ruled since independence in 1966, and over time the political system has evolved in a way that serves to entrench its dominance. One particular aspect that needs to be looked is the Westminster-style first-past-the-post way of determining winners in parliamentary constituency ballots, which results in the opposition gaining far fewer seats in the house than its share of the popular vote merits.
