BMI View. President José dos Santos recently confirmed that the long-delayed legislative elections will be held next year, but doubts remain about the possibility of the vote being free and fair. An electoral roll has been compiled, numbering about half the total population, but there are allegations that the registration process has mostly centred on areas loyal to the government. Wide-reaching laws restricting press freedom remain on the books, which could be used to stifle campaigning by the opposition.
