The political stagnation that has characterised 2007 has made the gradual debt reduction in our original forecasts unlikely (or at least delayed the process), and we now see the total burden remaining broadly stable in 2007 and 2008. However, it will fall slightly as a percentage of GDP, to 181% and 177% for the two years respectively, thanks to nominal GDP growth.
