November 2007 | Ratings UpdateMorocco's short-term political risk rating remains unchanged following the peaceful holding of elections in late October. Despite an increase in the number of seats held by the Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD), making it the second largest party in parliament, it has been kept out of government by a four-party coalition. In fact, the newly-formed cabinet closely resembles its predecessor and we expect few major changes in policy direction moving forward. However, this static state of affairs could pose longer-term democratic problems due to growing voter apathy; turnout at the recent elections was just 37%, a record low.
