Work on the planned 40-kilometre causeway between Qatar and Bahrain will begin by May 2008, following the signing in October 2007 of a preliminary agreement between the two Gulf states The causeway will provide both road and rail connections between the Qatari peninsula and the island state of Bahrain. More important, the so-called 'Friendship Causeway' highlights the resolution of one of the region's longest-standing disputes, dating back to a disagreement over sovereignty of the Hawar islands - eventually decided in Bahrain's favour by the International Court of Justice.
