There are no signs of instability ahead, and our political risk outlook is favourable, reflecting the absence of Islamist militantism. Sultan Qaboos will press on with his personal political reforms, and will appoint more women members to the Majlis al-Dawla, after female candidates failed to win any seats in the 27 October Majlis al-Shura elections. But the main worry is over the lack of a succession candidate. There are no signs of a mechanism to decide on the successor to Qaboos, as Saudi Arabia has managed with its newly formed allegiance committee. This provides the main undercurrent of political risk
