Civil Society Gets A Boost

We have tacked up our long-term political risk rating this month to 48.3 from 47.4, following the Supreme Court's decision to void the 'Public Order Act' which required citizens to apply and obtain a police permit or approval in order to hold rallies or assemble in public. The decision further entrenches democracy in the country, as the act had been used previously by the ruling People's Democratic Party to suppress its opposition. Specifically, we moved up Nigeria's score for its civil society and political party landscape. We made no changes to the short-term political risk ratings as Niger Delta attacks
