January 2008 | Ratings UpdateMorocco's short-term political rating has dropped slightly, from 68.5 to 67.7, reflecting our reassessment of the constraints on the country's policy direction from external sources. Specifically, Morocco's increasing commitment to partnership with the European Union is guiding trade, economic and immigration policy, reducing the government's manoeuvrability in these areas. While this has resulted in a minor rating downgrade, we do not necessarily see it as a negative development: closer regional and international ties should have a positive effect on Morocco's policy continuity, economic growth and security profile in the longer term.
