January 2008 | Ratings Update

January saw no let up in the spate of terrorist attacks that is plaguing Algeria. On January 29, a car bomb exploded in the town of Thenia, east of the capital Algiers, targeting two buildings that were temporarily being used as police offices. Thenia lies at the edge of Kabylie province, the main base of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), previously known as the GSPC. We reiterate our view that the escalation in violence is a cause for serious concern, although we do not believe that groups such as AQIM have broad support in Algerian society.
