February 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe government has called a general election for 19 March, contrary to the advice of everybody interested in a return to political stability. The country is in economic chaos, there have been no proper preparations in terms of essentials such a credible electoral roll, repression of any and all opposition continues on a daily basis, South Africa's attempt to create a level playing field for all candidates has hit the buffers, and there are no arrangements in place for independent election monitors.
